Did you know that Oktoberfest is a big deal in Brazil?

In 1984, in the southern part of Brazil, a city called Blumenau hosted its first Oktoberfest party? What began as a bid to raise not only money in order to repair the town but also the town's morale, after it has suffered a disastrous flood soon, turned into popular success. The festival is said to attract three-quarters of a million people annually, which is why it comes as no surprise at how quickly it had grown into one of the biggest Oktoberfest celebrations in the world, as Blumenau currently claim the rightfully earned title of being the second largest Oktoberfest celebration in the entire world!!

But what is it about Blumenau which attracts so many people annually? To begin with, their celebrations, the locals take great pride in the parade that happens beforehand, with their enormous and sometimes hilarious, but beautifully decorated floats which wind down every street and run throughout the city.

Loudspeakers blast oompah music and Euro-pop and the people on the floats are happy to provide a ton of entertainment from hosting beer drinking games to showing off their dance moves!! I should say now that these floats are no joke, the bigger the better, and nearly all having their own Kegs attached to them with glasses at the ready to hand out free pints to all those in attendance. The majority of people are beautifully dressed, their costumes, hair, makeup and accessories all carefully thought of and planned out, thus keeping a miraculous eye to detail. One float in particular that people look forward to each year is the Queen of Oktoberfest Beauty Pageant float, this is a competition that is held each year in Blumenau where ten contestants compete for the title of the Queen of Oktoberfest, of course only one lucky person is crowned winner but what's nice about this competition is that the runners up are not left out and take home their shared titles of Princesses of Oktoberfest. Once the parade eventually draws to an end down, the party then moves. Located just outside the city centre is a large purpose-built hall, similar to the beer halls you would find in Munich! Here the festival attendees experience night long concerts, with a pleasant mixture of both German and Brazilian music and live bands.
