  1. Did you know that Oktoberfest to the locals isn’t really about the Beer? Oktoberfest is the celebration of the anniversary between Bavarian crown prince Ludwig and his wife, Princess Therese of Saxony - Hildburghsusen. When they got married in 1810, the royals commemorated their union with a public party!!

  2. Did you also know that Oktoberfest is actually a celebration of Bavarian traditions, so the only beer you’ll find during the festival is brewed within the city limits of Munich. Only beers that fit this criteria are considered Oktoberfest Beers.

  3. Did you know that, the Oompah bands at Oktoberfest are famous for their unusual brass instruments. This includes the alpenhorn, which traditionally was used as a way to calm down anxious Cows around milking times in the Swiss Alps.

  4. Did you know that Oktoberfest has its very own Post Office? And they send around 130,000 postcards and gifts every year.

  5. Fun fact!! Did you know that the hairier the hat, the wealthier the wearer is supposed to be? During Oktoberfest, traditional visitors wear Bavarian hats (Tirolerhüte). Therefore, the more tufts of goat hair on your hat, the wealthier you’re considered to be.

  6. Did you know that in 1910, on its 100th birthday, 120,000 litres of beer were poured - thats about 1,500 bathtubs worth of beer.

  7. Did you know that Oktoberfest has been cancelled 24 times in the past 200 years. The causes for its cancellation were mostly due to the war and cholera epidemics.

  8. Did you know that Albert Einstein once worked as an electrician and helped to see up one of the beer tents in 1896.

  9. Another fun fact!! It wasn’t until 1892 that beer was served in glass mugs. They were traditionally made of stone, then they created them with metal but now they are mostly made of glass.

  10. Did you know that at Oktoberfest, the drinking can only commence when the master of ceremonies - the mayor of Munich, cracks open the first barrel of Beer, proclaiming ‘O’ ZAPFT IS (its tapped).

  11. Oktoberfest is famous for its fairground and got its first rollercoaster in 1908, which was actually the first ever roller coaster in Germany!!

  12. Did you know that each year, more than 6 million people attend Oktoberfest, and the largest tent seats 11,000 people and thats just one, yes, ONE, of the 14 tents that make up the festival!!

  13. Did you know that the most popular things to eat at Oktoberfest are Hendl (grilled Chicken) Schweinshaxe (Pork knuckles) and Osche (Oxen). Would you believe the amount of chicken eaten far outweighs the amount of sausages eaten!!

  14. Did you know that, anyone who wants to host Oktoberfest weather its opening up a food stall or tent has to wait up to twenty years.

  15. The amount of beer drunk at Oktoberfest could fill more than three Olympic sized swimming pools!!
